It began on a crisp autumn evening. I was reviewing merger projections in my home study when the smart-home automation system flickered. Every light in the mansion suddenly plunged into darkness. A split second later, the backup generators kicked in, bathing the room in a pale, amber emergency glow.
On my main computer monitor, the secure desktop background vanished, replaced by a blinking command-line prompt. Text began scrolling across the screen automatically, typed by an unseen remote hacker:
“The mountain remembers, Elena. And not everyone who pulled the trigger is underground.”
My breath hitched. Thomas Sterling was dead, Michael was buried under consecutive life sentences in maximum security, and Julian Croft was locked away. Who else could possibly know the intimate details of that day?
