Chapter 6 - The Frozen Assets

Three days later, seated in the high-back leather executive chair of my corporate penthouse overlooking downtown Denver, I watched the morning news broadcast on mute.

“...shocking developments in the multi-million-dollar insurance fraud scandal involving local tech tycoon Elena Carter and her husband, Michael Carter,” the anchor’s lips moved rapidly across the screen beneath a banner reading THE WIDOW WHO CAME BACK FROM THE DEAD. “Federal investigators have seized all corporate and personal accounts belonging to Mr. Carter following revelations of an offshore shell company tied to his executive assistant, Ashley Vance.”

A soft knock interrupted my thoughts.

The heavy oak door creaked open, and my lead corporate attorney, Marcus Vance—no relation to the traitorous assistant—stepped inside carrying a towering stack of forensic accounting files.

"Elena, you really shouldn't be back at work yet," Marcus said, his brow furrowing with paternal concern as he set the files down on my mahogany desk. "The doctor said minimum six weeks of bed rest after a C-section and severe frostbite trauma."

"Bed rest is for people who aren't currently dismantling a corporate saboteur," I replied smoothly, spinning my pen between my fingers. "Give me the status report, Marcus. What's left of Michael's personal portfolio?"

Marcus adjusted his glasses, a grim smile touching his lips. "As of 8:00 AM this morning, the courts granted your emergency asset freeze. Michael’s personal bank accounts, his luxury sports cars, his ski chalet in Vail, and his secret investment portfolios have all been slapped with federal liens. Because you proved he attempted to murder you for financial gain, the Slayer Rule applies. He doesn't get a single penny of your estate. In fact, he’s facing up to life without parole."

I nodded slowly, feeling a deep, satisfying warmth settle into my chest. "And Ashley?"

"Cooper cooperating fully with the district attorney," Marcus said, sliding a certified document across the desk. "She handed over text messages, audio recordings, and email chains proving Michael spent six months researching the exact insurance loopholes required to execute the crime. She’s pleading guilty to conspiracy in exchange for a reduced sentence of five years."

"Five years isn't nearly enough for someone who watched a pregnant woman get thrown off a cliff," I said coldly, signing my name across a digital authorization tablet to initiate a complete forensic audit of the company’s internal ledger. "Make sure our civil litigators go after every asset she owns as well. I want them both financially eradicated."

Marcus raised an eyebrow. "Done. By the way... how is the little guy?"

At the mention of my son, my icy exterior instantly melted. A soft, genuine smile curved my lips.

"Leo is thriving," I whispered, gazing at a framed photo of tiny, perfect fingers wrapped around mine in the NICU incubator. "He was discharged from the hospital this morning. My mother is setting up the nursery at my estate right now."

"Good," Marcus said softly. "You survived the mountain, Elena. Now it's time to build your empire back up—without the dead weight."
