Chapter 8 - The Ultimate Chess Move

The firefight inside the chalet lasted less than forty seconds. The elite security team neutralized the intruders with ruthless efficiency, pinning the surviving lead operative to the hardwood floor with a heavy combat boot against his chest.

Chloe stepped out from the shadows, her expression completely devoid of fear. She knelt beside the pinned assassin, her gaze colder than the winter storm raging outside.

"Who sent you?" she asked softly.

The masked man spat a glob of blood onto the floor and chuckled hoarsely. "You think... you caught everyone, Miss Vance? Elena was just a distraction. The real buyer of your company's foreign debt... already owns your primary voting shares."

Chloe’s eyes narrowed. Before the mercenary could utter another word, a red laser dot flickered across his forehead—a sniper from a higher ridge. Crack. The window behind them shattered again as a silenced round silenced the operative permanently.

Her comms crackled to life. Arthur’s urgent voice broke through the static, sounding older and more panicked than Chloe had ever heard him. "Chloe! Get out of the chalet now! The acquisition board meeting in Geneva—it was a trap! The board just voted to execute a hostile takeover clause based on an emergency debt default clause we never authorized!"

Chloe stood up, wiping a speck of dust off her blazer. A strange, calm clarity washed over her. She looked out at the dark, snow-covered mountains, realizing the true scale of the conspiracy. It wasn't just Elena. It was an institutional syndicate that had been plotting the destruction of Vance International for a decade.

"No, Dad," Chloe said into her comms, her voice steady and resolute. "We aren't running. If they want the throne, I'm going to hand it to them... wrapped in a bomb."
