Chapter 11 - The Phantom in the Shadows

The celebratory champagne at the Vance penthouse was still chilling when the encrypted burner phone on Chloe’s private desk buzzed with a single, silent text message.
There was no sound, only the vibration against the mahogany wood. Chloe picked it up, her eyes narrowing as she stared at the screen. The message contained a single GPS coordinate located deep within the financial district’s underground service tunnels, accompanied by a photo: a security badge belonging to her father's most trusted long-time legal advisor, who had supposedly retired to the Mediterranean months ago.
"Everything alright, sweetheart?" Arthur asked, walking into her study with a glass of scotch in hand, his posture relaxed for the first time in a year.
"Just a ghost checking in," Chloe replied smoothly, sliding her phone into her blazer pocket. "I need to review some final compliance documents downstairs. Don't wait up."
Within twenty minutes, Chloe’s private Maybach slid quietly into the subterranean service bay beneath the Vance financial hub. Dismissing her security detail with a strict order to stay above ground, she stepped out into the damp, concrete corridor armed only with her tactical intellect and a hidden recording device pinned inside her lapel.
The air down here smelled of rust, stagnant water, and ozone. She walked past humming transformer units until she reached Sector 4—the exact coordinate from the text.
A single overhead fluorescent light flickered erratically, casting long, twisting shadows against the concrete walls. Standing beneath it, cloaked in a heavy trench coat, was a figure leaning against a concrete pillar.
"I knew you’d come, Chloe," a raspy, familiar voice echoed through the tunnel.
The figure stepped forward into the dim light. It wasn’t the legal advisor. It was Victor Thorne—the former CEO of Thorne Industries, a corporate rival whom Arthur had legally bankrupted five years ago, a man long rumored to have died in a mysterious yacht explosion.
"Victor," Chloe said, her voice remaining ice-cold, completely devoid of panic. "They said you were ashes at the bottom of the Mediterranean."
May you like
"Death is a very convenient corporate strategy when the federal government is auditing your offshore accounts," Victor chuckled, stepping closer, his eyes gleaming with malicious satisfaction. "Elena was a pawn. Marcus was a fool. Even Julian was just a distraction. I’m the one who orchestrated your mother's death years ago, Chloe... and I’m the one who engineered your little stint as a maid."
Chloe’s heart hammered against her ribs, but her face remained an unreadable mask. "Why?"
