Chapter 2 - The Audit of Lies

"Get up, Chloe." Arthur’s voice was iron, but his hands were remarkably gentle as he pulled his daughter to her feet, shielding her raw, bleeding hands in his warm palms. He turned to the terrified housekeeper standing paralyzed in the shadows. "Mrs. Gable, bring a medical kit to my study immediately. And notify corporate security that the master wing is now on absolute lockdown. No one enters or leaves."

Elena found her voice, her panic morphing into a desperate, defensive venom. "Arthur, you’re making a scene over nothing! That ungrateful brat has been stealing from the estate! She forged grades, she lied, she—"

"Security," Arthur barked into his lapel microphone without even glancing at his wife. "Escort Mrs. Vance to her private quarters and confiscate all communication devices. She is not to touch a phone, a tablet, or a computer until further notice."

Two burly guards in dark suits materialized from the hallway instantly, flanking Elena before she could protest further. As they dragged her away, Elena shrieked, her mask completely slipping. "You can't do this! You signed the POA, Arthur! The assets are split! If you ruin me, I’ll expose the offshore accounts! I’ll ruin the Vance name!"

Arthur didn't flinch. He led Chloe into his sprawling private study, seating her in the plush leather armchair behind his mahogany desk—the very seat Elena had forbidden her to even touch. He knelt before her, gently applying antiseptic to her raw skin while a private doctor he had summoned examined her physical state.

"Listen to me, Chloe," Arthur said softly, his eyes burning with a dark, calculated resolve. "Everything Elena told you was a lie. You didn't lose your trust fund. Your university tuition was paid in full through 2028. But Elena didn't just target you to be cruel. She’s been systematically liquidating Vance subsidiary accounts for the past eight months."

Chloe blinked through her tears, the fog of exhaustion lifting. "Liquidating? But how? She needed your signature for major asset sales."

"She didn't forge my signature," Arthur replied, standing up and walking over to his wall safe. He spun the dial rapidly, punching in a complex biometric sequence. "She used a proxy. Someone inside our executive board helped her forge my medical incapacity paperwork while I was hospitalized for exhaustion last winter. And tonight, we’re going to find out exactly who invited the fox into the henhouse."
