Chapter 4 - The House of Cards

By dawn, the Vance empire was locked in an unprecedented media storm. Breaking news banners flashed across every financial channel: Vance International COO Arrested in Massive Internal Embezzlement Scheme; Emergency Board Meeting Called.

Back at the luxury villa, the atmosphere was suffocating. Elena sat at the massive dining table where she had once forced Chloe to eat table scraps from the floor. Now, two federal marshals stood sentinel at the double doors.

Arthur walked into the dining room, holding a single document. He didn't sit down. He looked down at his wife with a chilling, detached apathy.

"The frozen accounts have been restored," Arthur said evenly. "Marcus has already started singing to the district attorney to shave ten years off his federal sentence. Every asset you tried to siphon has been legally frozen and traced back to your personal accounts in Zurich."

Elena lunged forward across the table, her fingernails clawing at the air, her face twisted in pure, unadulterated hatred. "You arrogant bastard! You think you won? You were so busy playing CEO that you never saw what I did to your precious daughter's mind! I broke her, Arthur! Even if you jail me, she will never forget the feeling of scrubbing that floor with her bare hands! She’s damaged goods!"

Before Arthur could reply, a calm, chillingly composed voice echoed from the doorway.

"Wrong, Elena."

Chloe stepped into the sunlight streaming through the crystal chandeliers. She wasn't trembling anymore. She walked with the exact posture, the exact predatory grace of her father. She stopped three feet from Elena, looking down at her stepmother with profound pity.

"Trauma doesn't destroy us, Elena," Chloe whispered, her voice carrying a lethal sweetness. "Sometimes, it just strips away the naive little girl you thought you could crush... and leaves the apex predator behind."
