Chapter 7 - The Trial of Blood
The private maternity clinic was locked down under heavy armed guard. Outside the operating room, Alejandro paced like a madman, his hands stained with Lucía’s blood.
Hours bled into one another. Finally, the surgeon emerged, looking exhausted.
"Mr. Montero, your wife suffered an abrupt placental abruption brought on by extreme physical distress," the surgeon explained. "We had to perform an emergency C-section. Your daughter... she is very small, but she is breathing. She is in the NICU."
"And Lucía?" Alejandro’s voice cracked.
"She lost a significant amount of blood. She is in critical condition. We are doing everything we can."
Alejandro walked into the ICU, falling to his knees beside Lucía’s bed. He took her cold, pale hand and pressed it against his cheek, weeping silently. "Forgive me, Lucía. I was blind. I let them hurt you. Please... don't leave me."
