Chapter 14 - The Gala of Reckoning

Red laser sights danced across the bulletproof glass of the study windows. Outside, the sound of muffled gunfire echoed through the manicured gardens as Alejandro’s private security detail engaged Hector Vance’s mercenaries.
"Lucía, take Sofia to the panic room!" Alejandro bellowed, pulling a concealed firearm from beneath his desk.
"I'm not leaving you!" Lucía shouted back, grabbing a heavy steel briefcase containing the master equity files.
The heavy oak doors of the study blew inward with a deafening explosion. Smoke poured into the room as three masked gunmen rushed inside. Alejandro fired twice, taking down the lead operative, but a second mercenary slammed a rifle butt into Alejandro’s ribs, knocking him to the polished floor.
Hector Vance stepped through the smoke, holding a silenced pistol. Behind him walked a figure that made Alejandro’s blood run cold—Mateo, Alejandro’s personal legal counsel and closest friend of fifteen years.
"Mateo...?" Alejandro choked out, clutching his bruised chest. "You?"

"Business, Alejandro," Mateo said, his face completely devoid of emotion. "Your mother paid me three million dollars to forge Lucía’s psychological reports seven months ago. And Hector just offered me twenty million to finalize the transfer of the Gran Imperial stock."
Hector leveled his gun directly at Lucía’s head. "Hand over the briefcase, girl, or watch your husband die first."
