Chapter 13 - A Mother’s TreacheryElena stumbled backward, nearly tripping over the edge of an antique Persian rug in the grand hallway. She caught herself on the banister, her eyes darting frantically toward the parlor doors.

"I... I don't know what you're talking about, Sarah," Elena stammered, though her facade of maternal warmth was completely crumbling. "You look stressed, sweetheart. Why don't we sit down and get some tea—"

"Save the performance, Elena," Sarah interrupted, turning around to face her former mother-in-law with a gaze so piercing it made the older woman flinch. "My father's forensic auditors uncovered the unlisted subsidiary in the Caymans this morning. And guess whose name is listed right next to Michael's as the secondary beneficiary of four million dollars in embezzled capital?"

Elena’s jaw worked silently. The polished, untouchable matriarch of the Carter family suddenly looked very small, cornered, and desperate.

"Michael told you he was handling it, didn't he?" Sarah pressed forward, stepping closer. "You knew he was bleeding my family's trust dry. You helped him hide the assets behind a web of shell companies so you could maintain this ridiculous, hollow lifestyle after your husband’s pension dried up."

"He's my son!" Elena finally screamed, dropping the polite pretense entirely as tears of frustration welled in her eyes. "What was he supposed to do? Let you and your billionaire father treat him like an office boy? He deserved that money! We deserved security!"

Sarah felt a cold wave of disgust wash over her. There was no remorse here—only entitlement.

"Security?" Sarah echoed quietly. "You traded your integrity, your family name, and your relationship with your own granddaughter for blood money. And now, Elena, you're going to lose everything."

Before Elena could answer, Sarah pulled the legal folder from her tote bag and tossed it onto the mahogany console table.

"What is that?" Elena whispered, staring at the thick stack of papers as if it were a venomous snake.

"That," Sarah replied smoothly, "is a federal lien on this entire estate, filed thirty minutes ago under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act. By sunset, the U.S. Marshals will be here to seize the property. Happy Thanksgiving, Elena."
