Chapter 2 - The Sound of Shattered GlassInside Suite 1804, the air was thick with the scent of expensive French champagne and expensive deceit.

"He'll never suspect a thing," Lily murmured, her voice carrying clearly through the heavy door. "Sarah is too trusting. She probably thinks he's drowning in spreadsheets."
Michael laughed, the sound dripping with arrogant amusement. "Sarah only sees what she wants to see. She's predictable. That's why I married her—stability, home-cooking, someone to keep the house running while I climb the ladder. But you, Lily... you're the thrill."
Outside in the hallway, Sarah’s thumb didn't tremble as it held the record button. Every syllable etched itself into digital eternity. She zoomed in slightly on the door number plate, capturing the brass "1804" clearly in the frame, before pressing her hand against the electronic keypad lock sensor.
Miraculously, or perhaps through sheer divine irony, Michael hadn't deadbolted the secondary latch.
With a smooth, silent push, the heavy door clicked open an inch.
Sarah didn't rush in screaming like a cliché character in a midnight soap opera. She widened the gap slowly, stepping into the dimly lit foyer of the suite. Through the sheer partition of the living area, she saw them.
Lily was draped over the velvet sofa in a silk robe that belonged to the hotel, her bare legs tangled with Michael’s trousers as he leaned over her with a flute of champagne. Spread across the coffee table were takeout boxes from an exclusive downtown bistro—and next to them, a glittering diamond tennis bracelet resting inside an open velvet box.
"To us," Michael whispered, raising his glass. "And to getting rid of the dead weight once the baby comes and the trust fund is secured."

Sarah stepped around the partition, her heavy winter coat parting to reveal the unmistakable silhouette of her advanced pregnancy.
"Save your toast, Michael," Sarah said, her voice cutting through the jazz music like a razor blade. "You're going to need all the liquid courage you can get."
