Chapter 5 - The Sunrise AuditBy 5:00 AM, the Manhattan skyline was bleeding a bruised purple and gold through the twenty-third-floor windows of Sarah’s apartment.

The turkey on the kitchen counter had gone completely cold, its rosemary crust hardening into a monument of a dead life. But Sarah wasn't looking at the kitchen. She was sitting at the glass-topped dining table, surrounded by three laptops, a secure satellite printer, and her father, Richard Vance—a legendary corporate raider who had come out of retirement the moment his daughter called.
"The shell companies check out," Richard muttered, his fingers flying across his keyboard. "Michael has been siphoning development funds from the Downtown Brooklyn project into a private offshore account registered under a fictitious name—'L.H. Holdings'."
"L.H. for Lily Harper," Sarah noted, sipping a cup of black coffee. Her eyes were sharp, devoid of any fatigue. "She thought she was securing a sugar daddy. She was actually helping him build a paper trail straight to federal wire fraud."
The front door chimed.
Michael stood in the entryway, looking like a man who had aged ten years in six hours. His designer suit was wrinkled, his hair disheveled, and the manila envelope was clutched in his trembling hand like a shield.
"Sarah," Michael rasped, his voice cracked and hollow. "We need to talk. The corporate accounts... the bank just locked my executive portal. They flagged my primary assets for federal review. Did you... did you actually do this?"

Sarah didn't stand up. She simply turned her chair toward him, resting her hands calmly over her protruding belly.
"Good morning, Michael," she said smoothly. "Did you enjoy your Thanksgiving retreat?"
