Chapter 4 - The Ironclad TrapSarah dropped the manila envelope onto the smashed remnants of the champagne flute. The thick cardboard corner soaked up a drop of golden liquid.

"Read it before sunrise," Sarah instructed, her voice dropping into a register of absolute authority. "Because when your corporate lawyers open their emails at eight o'clock tomorrow morning, they're going to find copies of every single asset-hiding maneuver you've pulled over the last three years."

Michael stared at the envelope, his jaw working silently. "You... you don't know what you're talking about. I'm the CFO. Carter Residential is my domain—"

"Carter Residential belongs to your father-in-law's legacy trust, Michael, which my family funded when you were still a junior analyst living out of a Honda Civic," Sarah corrected, stepping toward the door. "My father left me primary controlling shares of the silent holding company. You thought you were climbing the ladder, but you were just standing on a trapdoor I built for you."

Lily scrambled off the sofa, tears streaming down her face, ruining her makeup. "Sarah, you can't be this cold! We're best friends! We've been through everything together!"

"Friendship ended the moment you decided to share my husband's bed while my child kicked inside me," Sarah said without looking back. "Enjoy the suite, guys. You're going to need all the luxury you can get tonight, because by tomorrow afternoon, Michael’s corporate credit cards are going to be permanently frozen."

With a sharp click of the door latch, Sarah stepped back out into the hallway, leaving behind two terrified wrecks whose entire world was crumbling into dust.

She walked down the corridor, her heart pounding a heavy, triumphant rhythm against her ribs. She pulled out her phone as she reached the elevator and dialed a familiar number.

"Dad?" Sarah said when the line picked up.

"Sarah, sweetheart? Is everything alright? It's Thanksgiving night—where's Michael?"

"He's busy," Sarah said, a cold, beautiful smile touching her lips. "Send the forensic auditors in. We're launching the corporate hostile takeover tonight."
