Chapter 9 - The New FoundationSix months later, the Manhattan spring sun poured golden light through the twenty-third-floor windows, warming the polished marble kitchen.

The scent of fresh vanilla and brewing espresso filled the air. There was no turkey, no forced holiday pretense, and no toxic shadows lingering in the corners of the rooms.

Sarah stood by the kitchen island, cradling a healthy, sleeping newborn baby girl wrapped in a soft pink blanket.

Maya Vance-Carter.

She had dropped her ex-husband's surname entirely from her professional life, reclaiming her maiden name with pride. Carter Residential had been restructured under her father's direct management, with Michael currently serving a five-year sentence in a federal correctional facility in upstate New York—abandoned by everyone, including Lily, who had long since vanished back into obscurity following her own financial investigations.

The doorbell chimed softly.

Sarah shifted Maya comfortably against her shoulder and walked to the door. She unlocked it to reveal her father, holding a bright yellow bouquet of spring tulips and a thick manila folder stamped with a court seal.

"Final decree arrived from the federal judge this morning," Richard said with a warm, proud smile, kissing the top of his granddaughter's head. "Everything is legally, permanently yours, sweetheart. Total victory."

Sarah looked down at the papers, then out at the magnificent, sprawling view of New York City gleaming beneath the bright May sky.

She wasn't a victim anymore. She was the architect of her own destiny.
