Chapter 19 - Closing the ChapterThe morning of Michael’s final sentencing hearing arrived with bright, clear autumn sunshine streaming through the federal courthouse windows in downtown Manhattan.

The courtroom was packed with journalists, corporate auditors, and legal observers eager to witness the fall of one of real estate's most notorious white-collar criminals.

Michael was led into the courtroom in heavy shackles, his orange prison jumpsuit hanging loosely over his emaciated frame. He looked older, broken, and utterly defeated. As he scanned the courtroom, his eyes caught sight of Sarah sitting in the front row, flanked by her father Richard and her newly appointed corporate partner, Jessica Miller.

Sarah didn't look at Michael with anger, hatred, or even contempt. She looked at him with absolute, profound indifference—the most painful thing a betrayer could ever experience.

The federal judge slammed his gavel down.

"Michael Carter, for charges of multi-million-dollar wire fraud, corporate embezzlement, racketeering, and systematic asset concealment, this court sentences you to fifteen years in a federal penitentiary with no possibility of parole, followed by full financial restitution."
