Chapter 6 - The UltimatumMichael staggered into the living room, ignoring Richard Vance sitting quietly in the corner. He dropped to his knees beside Sarah’s chair, grabbing the edge of her armrest.

"Sarah, please! You have to call your father off! If the board sees these forensic reports, I won't just lose my job—I'll be looking at federal indictments for embezzlement and corporate fraud! I'll go to prison!"

"Yes," Sarah agreed calmly. "That tends to happen when you steal four million dollars from your wife's family trust to fund a luxury lifestyle for your mistress."

"I was going to pay it back!" Michael cried, his voice breaking into a pathetic whine. "It was just a temporary leverage play! Lily meant nothing—it was just a stupid distraction!"

From the hallway behind him, a soft, tentative click of heels echoed.

Lily stepped into the apartment. She had managed to change into her street clothes, but her face was swollen, her mascara smeared down her cheeks. She looked around the opulent apartment with sudden, panicked realization.

"Sarah... please tell me Michael is exaggerating," Lily whispered, her voice shaking. "The police... the bank just rejected my debit card. They said my apartment lease, my car loan, everything tied to Michael's corporate endorsement has been seized as proceeds of financial crime."

Sarah looked at the two people who had conspired to destroy her life, feeling nothing but a profound, cleansing wave of pity.

"You thought you were so clever," Sarah said softly. "You thought you could discard me, take my family's money, and play house while I raised our child alone. But you forgot one fundamental rule, Michael."

She stood up slowly, her pregnancy belly asserting its powerful presence, towering over him as he knelt on the floor.

"Never underestimate a woman who built the empire you're standing in."
