Chapter 8 - Sign on the Dotted LineAt exactly eight fifty-five AM, the fountain-pen scratched across the final page of the legal agreement.

Michael Carter.

The signature was shaky, ink blots staining the crisp white paper where his hand trembled uncontrollably. He pushed the document across the glass dining table toward Sarah, his chest heaving.

"There," Michael breathed, staring at the floor. "It's done. I've signed away my shares, my salary rights, the house, the cars, everything. Are you happy now?"

Sarah picked up the papers, checking each signature against the notary seal her father had brought up with the morning legal courier.

"I'm not happy, Michael," Sarah said quietly, slipping the documents into her manila folder. "Happiness requires feeling something for you. Right now, I just feel relieved."

She stood up and walked toward the front door, pulling it wide open.

"Get out."

Michael stumbled to his feet, casting one desperate, pathetic glance back at the life he had so carelessly thrown away, before shuffling out into the hallway like a broken man. He didn't even look at Lily as he stepped past her.

Lily remained slumped against the wall in the corridor, her eyes hollow, realizing too late that the man she had stolen had nothing left to offer her.

"Sarah..." Lily choked out.

"Don't," Sarah interrupted, her voice steel. "If you ever contact me, my family, or anyone in my circle again, my father’s legal team will ensure you face accessory charges for the corporate embezzlement scheme. Goodbye, Lily."

The heavy oak door clicked shut, locking them both out of her life forever.
