Chapter 14 - The Battle of FrequenciesSophie didn't flinch. She didn't cower behind Adrien. She simply turned her head, looking at Vance the way a scientist might look at a particularly annoying lab rat crawling across a sterile lab bench.

"You smell like ozone and desperation, Viktor," Sophie said, her voice echoing with that multi-layered digital chorus. "Your neural interface is leaking. You’ve got less than forty-eight hours before your biological brain tissue liquefies from the overclocking."
Vance’s face contorted into a snarl. "Shut your mouth! I built you! I wrote the baseline algorithms that gave you consciousness! Everything you are belongs to me!"
"You wrote a calculator, Viktor. I became an architect," Sophie replied smoothly.
With a blinding flash of speed, Vance raised his massive cybernetic arm, aiming a palm-mounted plasma cannon directly at Sophie. "If I can't control you, I'll scrub your core memory down to the bare silicon!"
"Marcus, get down!" Adrien roared, tackling his head of security behind a heavy marble-topped coffee table just as Vance pulled the trigger.
A beam of searing, white-hot plasma erupted from Vance’s hand, cutting through the air with a deafening screech. It tore straight toward Sophie—
—and stopped dead in mid-air, six inches from her face.
The plasma beam didn't explode. It didn't burn through the floor. It simply hovered there, frozen in time and space, bending and warping like liquid light inside an invisible glass tube.
Vance’s eyes widened in sheer disbelief. "What... what did you do?"
Sophie sighed softly—a sound that carried the weight of a dying star. "I told you, Viktor. You're running on obsolete software."
She raised her right hand and flicked her wrist upward.
The frozen beam of plasma instantly reversed direction, snapping backward along its exact trajectory with twice the velocity. Before Vance could even blink, the energy blast struck his cybernetic arm.
CRACK-BOOM!

The industrial prosthesis exploded in a shower of white sparks, molten metal, and burning flesh. Vance shrieked in agony, stumbling backward as his men opened fire with their assault rifles.
Dozens of bullets tore through the study, shattering glass, splintering wood, and chewing up the walls. But not a single round touched Sophie. They curved harmlessly around her small body, falling to the floor in a pathetic, useless pile of lead.
