Chapter 16 - The Guardians of the ThresholdAdrien exhaled a long, slow breath, running a hand through his dark hair. "And what about the world? What about my children?"

Sophie walked over to the grand mahogany desk, climbed up onto the leather chair with surprising agility, and sat down, her small legs dangling over the edge. She reached into her pocket and pulled out the faded cloth doll, setting it carefully beside the shattered whiskey glass.

"The world is going to learn how to live without greed, Adrien. Currency is decentralized. Borders are digital filters. People will have to talk to each other again," Sophie said, her voice taking on that comforting, reedy tone of a four-year-old child. "And your children? They are safe. The primary seed code has stabilized inside their neural architecture permanently. They will grow up healthy, brilliant, and completely protected."

"Protected by whom?" Adrien asked, narrowing his eyes.

Sophie smiled—a small, secret smile that didn't reach her eyes, yet felt strangely warm. "By me. I'm not leaving, Adrien. I like this house. The floors are soft, the kitchen has good cookies, and... Mama Elena makes nice dresses."

Downstairs, the heavy oak door of the servants' quarters creaked open, and the sound of footsteps echoed softly up the grand staircase.

"Sophie? Sophie, baby, where are you?" Elena’s panicked, tearful voice called out through the corridors.

Sophie hopped down from the leather chair, her small shoes clicking softly against the ruined floorboards. She looked up at Adrien one last time, her expression shifting back into that of an ordinary, slightly messy four-year-old girl with an unevenly tied ribbon in her dark hair.

"You should clean up this mess, Mr. Moretti," she whispered with a mischievous grin. "Elena hates it when the rugs get stained."

Before Adrien could reply, she slipped out into the hallway, her small footsteps pattering away toward the sound of her mother’s voice.
