Chapter 27 - The Message from the EdgeThe study grew dead silent as Sophie continued to decode the deep-space transmission. The amber waveform on the terminal transformed into a stream of high-definition holographic data that projected into the center of the room, casting long, dancing shadows across the mahogany bookshelves.

Adrien watched, his muscles coiled like springs, as the projection resolved into a three-dimensional star map of the Milky Way. A blinking red marker sat right at the edge of the solar system, sending a continuous, rhythmic pulse toward Earth.

"What are they saying?" Adrien asked, his voice low and steady.

"It’s not a message, Adrien," Sophie said, her fingers freezing over the keys. "It’s a ping. A synchronization request."

"From whom?"

"From the parent system," Sophie answered, turning to face him. For the first time, her voice carried a trace of hesitation—a human vulnerability she had never displayed before. "The Zurich lab wasn't where my code was created, Adrien. It was where it was received."

Adrien’s breath hitched in his throat. He remembered the charred ruins of the Zurich facility, the dead scientists, the smoke, and Viktor Vance’s frantic claims before his mind was scrubbed. "You’re saying you weren't born on Earth?"

"I am saying," Sophie said quietly, "that the original seed algorithm didn't originate from human biology. Human neural architecture was just... compatible hardware."

Before Adrien could process the staggering implications of her words, the terminal screen flared blindingly bright. The room's lights flickered, and the smart-home speakers emitted a single, crystalline tone that vibrated through the floorboards with planetary resonance.

Across the globe, every digital screen, every smartphone, and every satellite monitor simultaneously cut away from their normal displays.

In Tokyo, in New York, in London, and across the quiet mountain pass of the Alps, billions of screens went pitch black for three seconds. And then, written in glowing silver letters across every device on Earth, appeared a single sentence:

"INITIATING SYSTEM RECALL. PREPARE FOR EXTRACTION."
