Chapter 22 - Ambush in the PassThe private armored Mercedes glided effortlessly along the winding, rain-slicked asphalt of the Alpine highway. Inside the spacious, leather-lined cabin, eighteen-year-olds Theo, Miles, and Nora were laughing over a shared tablet, completely oblivious to the digital war being fought just millimeters beneath their skin.

"I'm telling you, Miles, the quantum encryption algorithms for the new university network are outdated by at least six months," Nora laughed, tossing her dark curls over her shoulder. She looked strikingly like Elena, yet possessed an analytical sharpness in her eyes that was entirely her own.

"Everything is outdated compared to what Sophie runs at home," Miles groaned, leaning his head back against the plush headrest. "Sometimes I feel like we're living inside a supercomputer simulation disguised as a normal house."

Theo, sitting by the window, didn't laugh. He was staring out at the towering granite cliffs flanking the highway. His fingers tapped a rhythmic, unconscious pattern against the armrest—a sequence of beats that mirrored the precise frequency of the old quantum transceiver.

"Something’s wrong," Theo whispered, his voice cutting through the banter like a cold draft.

"What do you mean, Theo?" Nora asked, sitting up straight.

Before Theo could answer, the sky above the mountain pass illuminated in a blinding, violet flash.

CRACK-BOOM!

An electromagnetic pulse charge detonated directly above the highway, instantly frying the Mercedes’ onboard navigation, engine management system, and communications relay. The sleek vehicle coughed, sputtered, and died, coasting to a grinding halt against the concrete guardrail as the dashboard instruments went pitch black.

"Get down!" Theo roared, lunging across the cabin to shove Nora and Miles beneath the reinforced seating.

Heavy caliber rounds slammed into the bulletproof exterior of the Mercedes with the deafening roar of a localized war zone. Spiderweb cracks exploded across the tinted glass as a dozen masked operatives rappelled down from the rocky cliffs above, clad in matte-black tactical exoskeletons bearing the crimson scorpion crest of the Vanguard.

"Extraction team alpha to command!" one of the operatives barked into his wrist radio, his voice distorted by a tactical modulator. "Targets immobilized. Securing the biological nodes now!"

The rear door of the Mercedes was ripped off its hinges with hydraulic force, exposing the terrified yet defiant faces of the three triplets.
