Chapter 2 - The Housekeeper’s Secret"Give it back!"

For the first time since Adrien had entered the room, Sophie reacted. She didn't cry; she lunged. Her tiny fists struck his shins with the fury of a trapped animal, her teeth bared, her face contorting into something feral.

"Hold her!" Adrien barked over his shoulder, tossing the writhing doll onto a high mahogany shelf out of reach.

Elena, the head housekeeper and Sophie’s mother, threw herself across the room, scooping her daughter up into her arms. The woman was shaking so violently she could barely stand, her gray uniform soaked with cold sweat.

"I am so sorry, Mr. Moretti! I swear on my life, I didn't know—she found it in the basement trash chute three days ago, she wouldn't let go of it—please, don't hurt us, please!" Elena sobbed, burying Sophie’s face into her shoulder to muffle the child's high-pitched shrieks.

"Shut up, Elena," Adrien hissed, his eyes locked on the doll resting on the shelf.

The toy wasn't moving, but a thin, steady curl of gray smoke was beginning to seep from the torn seam where Sophie had pressed her thumb. A faint, high-frequency whine filled the room—a sound so sharp it made Adrien's teeth ache.

"Mr. Moretti," Dr. Cole said from the corner, her face completely drained of color as she pressed her stethoscope against Miles’s chest. "Mr. Moretti, you need to look at this monitor."

Adrien strode over, shoving past a trembling nanny. Dr. Cole held out her high-tech medical tablet, which was wirelessly synced to the children’s biometric bracelets.

The heart rates of all three triplets weren't just normal—they were identical. Down to the exact beat. 122 beats per minute. Not a fraction of a variation. It was medically impossible for three separate human bodies, even identical triplets, to share a single, perfectly synchronized cardiovascular rhythm unless...

"They're being driven," Adrien whispered, the horror dawning on him with crushing weight. "It's not a medical issue. It's a signal."

"Not just a signal," Dr. Cole whispered back, pointing a shaking finger at the screen. "Look at the data stream. It’s transmitting out. Someone isn't just monitoring them... someone is controlling them."

Before Adrien could process the sentence, the nursery’s smart-home speaker system crackled to life. The soothing lullaby playlist stopped abruptly, replaced by a low, synthesized chuckle that vibrated through the floorboards.

“Good evening, Adrien,” a voice purred through the speakers—distorted, layered, and chillingly familiar. “Did you really think you could hide your bloodline behind high walls and private security?”

Adrien whipped around toward the intercom, his hand instantly dropping to the heavy Glock holstered beneath his tailored jacket. "Who the hell is this? Name your price. If you want money, state your terms."

The voice laughed again—cynical, mocking, and dripping with venom.

“Money? Keep your blood-soaked cash, Moretti. We didn't come for your fortune. We came to collect the key.”

The intercom clicked off. At that exact second, every door in the massive penthouse estate locked with a resounding, heavy thud of automated deadbolts.
