Chapter 16 - THE FINAL CONFESSION

Back at the penthouse, a battered, frail Richard Carter sat in a velvet armchair, having surrendered himself to his son’s mercy after Sarah’s betrayal at the office.
"I didn't want them to hurt her, James," the old man wept, his iron-clad facade finally shattered into dust. "The syndicate... they threatened to wipe out our entire family thirty years ago. That’s why I pushed Rebecca away. That’s why I tried to hide the child. I was trying to protect the bloodline."
"By destroying it?" James’s voice was ice. "You sold your soul for a shield that turned out to be a cage."

Before Richard could answer, the penthouse doors burst open. Rebecca stood there, breathless, bruised, but fiercely alive, holding a flash drive she had ripped straight from the syndicate operative’s comm-link in SoHo.
"The shield is broken, Richard," Rebecca said, stepping forward. "Now we take the war to them."
