Chapter 12 - THE SHADOW BENEFACTOR

Two weeks later, Rebecca stood in the sunlit open space of her newly restored art studio in SoHo. Canvases lined the exposed brick walls, vibrant with the red and green hues of her reclaimed life. A sleek black envelope was slipped under the heavy iron door. Inside was no note—only a polaroid photograph taken twenty years ago, showing an old man with piercing blue eyes standing outside a modest Queens apartment, holding a newborn infant wrapped in a blue blanket.

Rebecca’s breath caught in her throat. The man in the photo wasn't Richard Carter. It was her own grandfather, long believed to have died in a mysterious fire before she was even ten years old.

She turned the photo over. Scrawled in shaky, elegant handwriting were the words: The bloodline cannot be bought, Rebecca. They are coming for the child.

Before she could call James, the studio lights flickered and died. Heavy boots creaked on the wooden floorboards behind her.
