Chapter 14 - THE TRAP AT DUSK

James didn't hesitate. He scooped Lily up, handed her to Marcus with a look that brooked no argument, and drew his weapon.
"Lock down the building. No one leaves through the freight elevators."
He stalked down the dim, architectural corridors of the high-rise, his footsteps silent on the thick wool carpeting. In the executive suite, a shadowy figure was hunched over the main terminal, downloading classified quantum encryption algorithms.
"End of the line," James said, stepping into the doorway, his pistol leveled at the intruder’s back.

The figure slowly turned. It wasn't an assassin. It was Sarah Vance—Julian’s mother—wearing a cold, calculating smile and holding a dead-man's switch connected to the building's emergency structural charges.
"You think you won everything, James?" Sarah sneered, her finger hovering over the trigger. "Julian was just a distraction. The real empire was never yours to keep."
