Chapter 4 - THE MIDNIGHT SURGERY

Back at New York General Hospital, the digital clock above the ICU read 2:14 AM.
James sat in the sterile waiting room with Lily curled up beside him, her thumb resting lightly in her mouth. His private lab courier had already arrived, taken a cheek swab from the sleeping child, and rushed it back to the corporate science facility for a rapid-sequence genetic profile.
Dr. Thomas pushed through the double doors, looking exhausted, his surgical scrubs stained with dark crimson.
James stood instantly, careful not to wake Lily. "Talk to me."
"We stopped the internal bleeding," Dr. Thomas said, wiping sweat from his brow. "She took a severe blow to the temple—someone definitely tried to put her down for good. But she’s stable. She’s in a medically induced coma to let her brain swelling subside, but... Mr. Carter, she’s asking for someone before we put her under."
James stepped forward. "For me?"
"No," the doctor hesitated. "She kept whispering a name over and over. 'Markus... don't let Markus take her.'"
James froze. Markus?
That wasn't a random name. Markus Vance was Richard Carter’s ruthless chief operating officer—the man who handled all of the family’s 'off-the-books' asset recovery and intimidation tactics.
So Richard had ordered it. The old man had lied straight to his face.
Before James could rage, his phone chimed. An encrypted email from his private lab.
He opened the attachment.
PATERNITY PROBABILITY: 99.999% BIOLOGICAL FATHER: JAMES CARTER
He stared at the screen, a strange, fierce ache blooming in his chest. Lily was his. Five years of stolen memories, five years of phantom grief, all compressed into a four-year-old girl who was currently dreaming about waffles and a battered teddy bear.
Suddenly, the waiting room lights flickered violently and died.

The emergency backup generators kicked in with a low, industrial hum, casting a sickly yellow hue over the hallway.
Heavy footsteps echoed outside the double doors. Heavy, synchronized, tactical footsteps.
