Chapter 6 - THE RUNAWAY FORTRESS

Carrying Lily down twelve flights of concrete stairs in the dead of night, James felt every muscle in his body burn. Lily woke up halfway down, whimpering, burying her face in his neck.

"Daddy?" she whispered, using the word for the very first time.

James’s heart skipped a beat, a fierce wave of protectiveness washing away all lingering doubts. "I’m here, sweet girl. I’m right here. We’re going on an adventure."

When they burst out into the ambulance bay, the cool New York air hit them like a physical blow. His Maybach was waiting, idling recklessly across two disabled parking spots, his head of security, Marcus (not the traitorous COO, but his loyal namesake and childhood friend), standing by the rear door with a shotgun.

"Boss! We intercepted radio traffic—the building is compromised!" Marcus yelled, holding the door open.

"Get in!" James ordered, strapping Lily safely into a custom booster seat in the back before sliding in beside her.

As the Maybach squealed out of the hospital zone, leaving burning rubber on the asphalt, James fired up his encrypted satellite tablet. He bypassed corporate servers and logged directly into the federal intelligence database using his emergency override credentials.

He typed in a single name: Rebecca Morgan.

Files began to cascade down the screen. Medical records, housing logs, employment history... and a hidden folder stamped with a high-level Carter Enterprises security seal.

"Marcus," James said, his eyes hard as glass. "Pull up the financial logs for our subsidiary, Vanguard Logistics. Where did the funds for tonight's hit originate?"

Marcus typed furiously from the front passenger seat, his face pale under the dashboard lights. "Boss... it’s not just your dad. The funds came from an offshore account registered to... to Sarah Vance."

Sarah Vance. His father’s long-time mistress and the mother of Julian Vance—James’s treacherous corporate rival who had been trying to oust him as CEO for two years.

It wasn't just about cutting ties. It was a corporate coup. If Rebecca died, and James was implicated in an illegal custody battle or a homicide investigation, Julian Vance would take over Carter Enterprises by morning.
