Chapter 5 - THE ASSASSIN IN THE CORRIDOR

James slid his phone into his pocket and stepped smoothly in front of the sofa where Lily was sleeping. He reached inside his jacket, wrapping his hand around the cold, checkered grip of the custom Walther PPK he legally carried for executive protection.
The frosted glass doors of the ICU waiting room slid open with a hiss.
Two men stepped inside. Black tactical gear, no insignia, faces obscured by reinforced Kevlar masks. In the hands of the lead man was a silenced H&K MP5 submachine gun.
"Visiting hours are over, Mr. Carter," a voice modulated through a digital filter rasped from the shadows. "The old man sends his regards. Loose ends must be neatly tied."
James didn't flinch. He drew the pistol with fluid, military-grade precision, leveling the barrel directly between the lead assassin's eyes.
"Tell Markus and my father that their math is off," James said, his voice dropping into a lethal purr. "They forgot to calculate the cost of a father defending his blood."
The assassin laughed, raising his weapon—
BANG.
James fired through the drywall, shattering a fire extinguisher mounted just behind the intruder's head. A blinding cloud of white chemical powder exploded across the room, choking the air and destroying their visibility.
"Lily! Hold your breath!" James barked, spinning around, scooping the child into one arm while keeping his pistol leveled with the other.

Through the white haze, a burst of suppressed gunfire chewed through the drywall, splinters raining down on the sofa. James returned fire blindly, hearing a heavy thud as one of the intruders took a round to the shoulder.
He kicked open the emergency stairwell door, slipping into the dark concrete stairwell just as the alarm bells began to wail through the hospital.
