Chapter 9 - THE PROMISE KEPT

Two weeks later, the morning sun poured through the floor-to-ceiling windows of James’s Tribeca penthouse, filling the room with the rich aroma of fresh waffles and melted maple syrup.

Lily sat at the marble kitchen island, wearing an oversized pink apron, enthusiastically dusting powdered sugar over a mountain of waffles while Mr. Bear watched from the stool beside her.

"More sugar!" Lily demanded, giggling.

Rebecca laughed, leaning against the counter with a steaming mug of coffee. Her hair fell in soft red waves around her shoulders, completely healed from the trauma of the accident.

James walked up behind her, wrapping his arms around her waist, resting his chin softly on her shoulder.

"Are you sure you don't want any more sugar, boss?" James whispered into her ear.

Rebecca smiled, turning around in his embrace and wrapping her arms around his neck. "I think I’ve got enough sweetness in my life right now. Especially after you bought out half the toy stores in Manhattan for her."

"She deserves it," James said softly, his eyes softening as he looked over at their daughter. "She’s the best investment I ever made."

Lily suddenly hopped down from her stool, marching over to James with a sticky plate holding a lopsided, slightly burnt waffle.

She held it up to him with a serious, grown-up expression.

"Here you go, James," she said formally. "I told you I’d pay you back when I grew up. But since I’m not big yet, you can have my best waffle."

James knelt down on one knee, taking a bite of the ridiculously sweet pastry with a solemn, emotional smile.

"It’s the best payment I’ve ever received, Lily," he said, pulling both Rebecca and their daughter into his arms, knowing that the empire he built finally had a soul, a family, and a future that could never be broken again.
