Chapter 7 - THE WAKE-UP CALL

Dawn broke over Manhattan, painting the skyscrapers in streaks of bruised purple and gold.

Inside the VIP penthouse suite of a safehouse overlooking Central Park, Lily was sleeping soundly in a plush guest bed, clutching Mr. Bear like a lifeline. A private pediatrician had already checked her over—she was bruised and shaken, but physically unharmed.

James sat in a leather armchair by the window, watching the sunrise with a glass of scotch he hadn’t touched.

The secure burner phone on the table lit up.

It was an incoming video call from Richard Carter’s private study.

James swiped to answer.

His father’s face appeared on the screen, looking older, colder, and remarkably unrepentant. Behind him stood Sarah Vance and her son Julian, smirking like victors before the battle was even called.

"You played a dangerous game last night, James," Richard said, swirling his morning coffee. "Running off with a dead woman’s bastard. You’ve brought shame to the Carter name."

"The only thing bringing shame to this family is the rot sitting in this room," James replied, his voice dead calm. "You sent men to kill Rebecca in the hospital. And Julian’s mother funded it through Vanguard Logistics."

Julian stepped into the frame, laughing softly. "Prove it, cousin. By noon today, the board is holding an emergency vote to strip you of your CEO title due to 'mental instability and erratic personal behavior.' You’re finished."

James didn't blink. He reached down and tapped his tablet, routing a live video feed directly to their screens.

The screen split.

It showed the interior of New York General Hospital’s intensive care unit.

And on the bed, sitting upright with a white bandage wrapped around her red hair, was Rebecca Morgan. Her green eyes—the exact same shade as Lily’s—were staring straight into the camera lens with a cold, unforgiving fire.

Richard’s coffee cup slipped from his fingers, shattering against the Persian rug.

Julian’s smirk vanished instantly, replaced by sheer, unadulterated terror.
