Chapter 19 - THE FATHER'S SHOT

Lily didn't cry. She looked past Julian’s trembling arm and locked her bright green eyes directly onto James.

"Mr. Bear says you can do it, Daddy," she whispered bravely.

Time seemed to slow down to a crawl. James closed his eyes for a fraction of a second, feeling the wind, measuring the distance, centering every ounce of his soul into a single, perfect focal point.

His hand drew his pistol with fluid, lightning speed.

BANG.

The bullet sliced through the air, striking the exact slide-lock mechanism of Julian’s weapon, shattering the gun into a thousand pieces of smoking metal.

Before Julian could even scream, Marcus tackled him hard from the blind side, sending him crashing onto the concrete.

James sprinted forward, ripping Lily out of the wreckage of Julian's grasp, pulling her tightly against his chest as hot tears finally spilled down his cheeks.

"I've got you, my sweet girl. I've got you," James choked out, burying his face in her tangled brown hair.
