Chapter 1 - THE SECRET IN THE KITCHENJames stood in the dark kitchen, his hands trembling over the cold stainless steel counter. He wasn’t just the manager who closed up every night—he was James Sterling, sole heir to the Sterling Enterprises fortune, living under an assumed identity to escape the ruthless vultures of his family’s empire. But in that frozen moment, none of his billions mattered.
He pulled open the industrial refrigerators, pulling out fresh turkey breast, artisan bread, rich butter, fruits, and cheese—provisions stored for the high-end holiday rush. Within minutes, the warm, rich scent of melting butter and toasted bread filled the air.
When James walked back into the dining room carrying a large wooden tray laden with warm food, hot cocoa, and fruits, Grace looked up in utter panic.
"Mr. James, please... we can't afford this," Grace stammered, pulling Chloe closer.
"It’s already paid for," James said softly, setting the tray down before the wide-eyed little girl. "Eat. Please."
Chloe didn't wait. She grabbed a warm sandwich with both hands, tears welling in her eyes as she took a bite. "It’s so good, Mommy! It’s warm!"
Grace looked at James, her eyes full of raw emotion. But before she could speak, James’s phone vibrated violently on the counter. The screen lit up with a restricted caller ID. He stepped back to answer.
"James," a cold, harsh voice sneered through the speaker. "Did you really think hiding as a restaurant manager in a third-tier city would protect you from the board? We know where you are. And we know about the girl."
