A blinding light and deafening bang exploded through the parking garage. James pulled Grace and Chloe into a high-powered sports car parked in an executive bay, slammed the accelerator, and smashed through the garage's exit gate, bursting out onto the snow-covered streets of the city.
Tires squealed as two dark SUVs gave chase through the blizzard. Bullet impacts peppered the reinforced rear glass of James's vehicle.
"James, is it true?" Grace wept, hugging Chloe close as the car swerved around a corner. "Is your father really alive? Is he behind all this suffering?"
"My father was a brilliant man, Grace, but his greed corrupted him," James replied through clenched teeth, his hands expertly maneuvering the steering wheel. "He staged his death to escape international prosecution, leaving Richard to take the fall while he pulled the strings from the dark. But I won't let him hurt you or Chloe. Not anymore."
They arrived at the small, dark restaurant where their story had begun just weeks ago. But as James slammed the brakes, horror struck them both.
Thick black smoke was pouring from the front windows. Flames were already licking the dark wood exterior. Victoria’s vanguard units had reached the location first and set it ablaze to force the secret out into the open.
"No!" Grace cried out. "The memory of my mother... the only thing I have left!"
James looked at the burning building, then at the headlights of Victoria’s approaching convoy in his rearview mirror.
