Coughing and bleeding, James pushed himself up from the snow. The tarnished steel box sat on the ice between him and Edward.
Cars screeched to a halt all around them. Victoria stepped out, flanked by armed men, aiming a weapon directly at James. Seconds later, police sirens wailed in the distance, blue and red lights flashing against the snowstorms.
"It’s over, Edward! It’s over, Victoria!" Grace shouted, stepping out of James's car with her phone raised high. "I’ve been livestreaming this whole encounter to every major news outlet in the country! The world sees who you really are!"
Edward’s face twitched with venomous rage. "You stupid girl..." He reached into his coat to pull a weapon.
BANG!
A single shot rang out across the quiet street. But it wasn't Edward or Victoria who fired.
From behind the police barricades, Federal Agent Marcus—the lead investigator who had originally worked Grace's fraud case—stepped forward, his rifle aimed directly at Edward's shoulder. Edward dropped his weapon, collapsing into the snow, groaning in pain.
"Edward Sterling! You are under arrest for treason, murder, and high-level financial terrorism!" Agent Marcus commanded as tactical officers swarmed the area, disarming Victoria and her mercenaries without a single further shot.
