"Chloe!" Grace screamed, running through the pitch-black corridor toward her daughter's bedroom.
James whipped out his tactical flashlight and a hidden sidearm from his desk vault. "Grace, stay behind me!" he commanded, his voice filled with adrenaline. He knew the building's emergency generators should have kicked in within three seconds. The fact that they remained off meant one terrifying thing: an inside job.
They burst into Chloe’s room just as the heavy glass balcony window shattered into thousands of icy shards. A masked operative clad in night-visibility gear swung into the room from a rappelling cable dropped from a silent helicopter hovering above.
"Get away from her!" Grace roared with a mother’s wild instinct, snatching a heavy brass lamp from the nightstand and slamming it with all her strength against the intruder’s helmet.
The operative stumbled back, surprised by the force of her attack. James fired two precise shots into the intruder’s body armor, dropping him to the floor. Outside on the balcony, three more mercenaries stepped over the ledge.
"We have to move to the safe room now!" James yelled, scooping up Chloe into his arms while grabbing Grace’s hand.
They sprinted down the private service stairwell as gunfire echoed behind them. They reached the subterranean parking garage, but as the heavy security doors opened, James stopped dead in his tracks. Standing in front of his armored SUV was a woman in a sharp white suit, flanked by six armed guards.
Grace gasped, her eyes widening in horror. "Victoria...?"

The woman smiled, stepping forward into the dim light. "Hello, Eleanor. Or should I say... little sister?"
