Chapter 8 - THE SHADOWS REMEMBERThe storm outside began to roll in over the ocean, heavy thunder rumbling across the coastline as sheets of rain lashed against the massive floor-to-ceiling windows of the penthouse. Inside, the world felt entirely isolated from corporate politics, lawsuits, and failing empires.

Evelyn’s hands slid up my chest, her fingers tracing the lapel of my shirt—the exact same spot she had grabbed hours ago when the door had first been locked.
"You know, when I walked into your room tonight," Evelyn whispered, her voice barely audible over the sound of the rain, "I was terrified. Not of Richard, not of the board... but of what would happen if you said no. If you had chosen to stay safe, to stay invisible..."
"I spent my entire life being invisible, Evelyn," I replied, catching her hands in mine, our fingers interlacing. "Stuck behind spreadsheets, paying off debts I didn't create, hiding behind a desk because I was afraid of taking a risk. You didn't just give me an audit to run. You gave me a reason to step out of the shadows."
She smiled, a rare, breathtakingly genuine expression that softened the hard edges of her corporate persona completely. "You were never just an analyst to me, Austin. From the moment you stared down Sterling during the Q2 budget review without blinking... I knew you were cut from a different cloth."

"Is that why you locked the door?" I teased softly, a smirk playing on my lips.
"I locked the door because I wanted to make sure no one could interrupt the best decision I've ever made," she whispered, rising onto her tiptoes.
