Chapter 17 - THE WEIGHT OF THE CROWNThe heavy oak door clicked shut behind my father, leaving Evelyn and me alone amidst the scattered papers on the floor. The storm outside had died down, replaced by a heavy, oppressive stillness that hung over the penthouse like a shroud.

I sank onto the sofa, burying my face in my hands. The entire architecture of my life—my struggles, my loyalty, my ambition, my love for Evelyn—felt like it had been constructed on a fault line.
"Austin..." Evelyn whispered, sitting down beside me on the plush cushions. She gently placed her hand over mine, her skin warm and steady against the cold tremor in my fingers. "Look at me."
I raised my head, meeting her dark, searching eyes. There was no corporate armor left on her; she was just a woman sharing the suffocating weight of a broken world with the only person she trusted.
"Your father’s pain was real," Evelyn said softly, her thumb gently stroking the back of my hand. "The people who ran this company twenty years ago were monsters in tailored suits. But you are not your father’s weapon, Austin. You chose a different path. You chose truth, transparency, and integrity when you could have walked away with millions."

"He spent his whole life letting hatred consume him," I muttered, my voice breaking. "I was so terrified of becoming him, and yet I walked right into his trap."
"You didn't walk into a trap," Evelyn corrected, leaning in closer until her forehead rested gently against mine, her scent of amber and bergamot washing over me like a sanctuary. "You broke the cycle. You brought the corruption into the light. Whatever comes next... we face it together. As partners. Not as boss and subordinate."
