Chapter 3 - THE WHISPERS OF THE SUMMIT BALLROOMThe grand ballroom of the coastal resort was a sea of glittering crystal chandeliers, expensive tuxedos, and predatory smiles. As Evelyn and I made our entrance—not as a panicked executive and a cornered subordinate, but side-by-side, moving with synchronized precision—the low hum of chatter across the room stuttered and died.

Every eye turned toward us. Sterling trailed a few steps behind, looking like a whipped dog trying to figure out how his master’s leash had suddenly slipped. Richard Vance was already at a corner table, huddled with three other board members, their faces dark and thunderous as they realized their midnight ambush in my hotel room had completely backfired.
"Look at them," Evelyn murmured under her breath, her fingers lightly brushing against my sleeve as we paused at the top of the grand staircase. "They thought they could corner the wounded animal. They didn't realize the animal brought a pack."
"They're terrified," I replied, scanning the room. "Look at Senator Hayes. He’s already shifting his weight. If the board tries to force a vote tonight, they won't have the unanimous consensus they need."

"Exactly," Evelyn said, turning her head slightly so her lips were inches from my ear. The scent of amber and bergamot washed over me again, grounding me amidst the swirling sea of corporate sharks. "Which is why they’re going to make their move during the opening toast. When I call you up to the podium to present the audit findings, do not hesitate, Austin. Drop the hammer."
Before I could answer, the master of ceremonies tapped his microphone, signaling the start of the evening's formal proceedings. The air grew tense. The board was about to spring its trap, unaware that we had already rewritten the script.
