Chapter 9 - THE ULTIMATE TAKEOVERThe morning sun broke over the coastal horizon, painting the sky in violent shades of gold, amber, and deep crimson. The rain had cleared, leaving behind a crisp, pristine morning air that smelled of wet earth and ocean salt.

My phone on the nightstand began to buzz incessantly—emails from corporate headquarters, missed calls from frantic HR directors, urgent text messages from surviving vice presidents demanding emergency briefings before the stock market opened in two hours.
I reached out blindly from the rumpled sheets, silenced the phone, and tossed it onto the sofa across the room.
Evelyn stirred beside me, her head resting comfortably on my chest, her dark hair scattered across the pillows. She opened her eyes, a contented smile touching her lips as she listened to the dead silence of the phone.
"Market opens in ninety minutes," she murmured lazily, her fingers tracing idle circles against my skin. "The financial news channels are going to have a field day with the board arrests."
"Let them," I replied, wrapping my arm tighter around her waist, pulling her closer. "The company has a new board, a frozen scandal, and a vacant CFO seat that I assume I'm drastically overqualified for."
May you like
"Overqualified?" Evelyn laughed, sitting up and letting the white linen sheet slip down her shoulders, her eyes sparkling with amusement and authority. "Don't get cocky, Mr. Cole. You still have to survive my Monday morning executive meetings."
"I survived a hostile takeover in a hotel room with you," I smiled, pulling her back down. "I think I can handle a few spreadsheets."
