Chapter 19 - THE LOCKED DOOR UNLOCKEDBy late afternoon, the office was quiet again. The city hummed below us, vibrant and relentless.

I stood by the window of the corner office, looking out over the sprawling skyline, feeling the strange, grounding peace of a battle finally finished.

The heavy oak office door clicked softly behind me. I didn't even need to turn around to know who it was. The subtle, familiar scent of amber and bergamot drifted across the room, followed by the soft whisper of silk against the floor.

Evelyn walked up beside me, her shoulder pressing lightly against mine as she looked out at the horizon.

"You know," Evelyn murmured, a playful, teasing glint in her eyes, "technically, as the Chief Financial Officer reporting directly to the Chief Executive, closing and locking this office door during business hours violates at least three separate corporate compliance codes."

I smiled, turning to face her, wrapping my arms gently around her waist as she rested her hands lightly on my chest—mirroring the exact pose from our very first meeting in the hotel room three months ago.

"Then it's a good thing," I whispered, leaning down until my lips brushed her ear, "that I'm the one who audits the compliance department."

Evelyn laughed softly, a bright, genuine sound that chased away the last lingering shadows of the past. She reached out, pulled the heavy oak door completely shut, and turned the brass lock herself.
