Chapter 1 - The Midnight Raid

The grandfather clock in Judge Victoria Sterling’s library struck 1:00 AM, each chime echoing like a gavel blow. Upstairs, Clara was finally asleep, the on-call obstetrician having confirmed via a secure, encrypted video link that the baby was safe despite the trauma. Downstairs, Victoria sat at her mahogany desk, the sealed wiretap warrant glowing softly under her brass lamp.

Her phone buzzed again. Another message from Dominic. Tick-tock, Victoria. You have until sunrise to return my property.

Victoria didn't reply. Instead, she picked up her encrypted landline and dialed a direct, highly restricted number at the Department of Justice.

“This is Judge Sterling,” she said, her voice steady and razor-sharp. “Advance the timeline. We execute at 4:30 AM instead of dawn. Hit every location simultaneously: the shipping docks, the municipal precinct, and Dominic’s private estate. Leave no asset unseized.”

On the other end, Director Vance didn’t hesitate. “Understood, Your Honor. The tactical teams are already staging.”

Dominic thought he had the county locked down, but he had forgotten one fundamental rule of federal jurisdiction: local badges mean nothing when the warrants are signed at the federal level. Victoria closed her laptop, walked to the window, and watched the rain lash against the glass. Dominic Ward was about to learn that power isn't measured by how many corrupt cops you buy—it's measured by who holds the ultimate authority to tear your empire apart.
