Chapter 20 - The Gavel Rests

That evening, the Sterling household was filled with the warm, cheerful sounds of laughter, wooden building blocks crashing onto the living room rug, and the savory aroma of a family dinner roasting in the kitchen.
Clara knelt beside her child, helping stack a towering tower of wooden blocks before looking up as her mother walked through the front door, setting her heavy leather briefcase down by the hall table.
“You’re home early, Mom,” Clara smiled, wiping a smudge of flour off her cheek.

Victoria walked over, kneeling beside her daughter and grandchild to place the final wooden block securely on top of the tower without it tumbling down.
“The docket was light today,” Victoria said softly, her eyes shining with quiet warmth. “And I figured some things are far more important than any federal ruling.”
