Chapter 16 - Healing on the Porch

Back at the Sterling estate, the autumn air carried a crisp, clean scent that signaled the final turning of the season.

Clara sat on the old wooden porch swing, wrapped in her mother’s cashmere robe, gently resting her hand against her growing abdomen. The terror of that rainy midnight months ago felt like a distant, faded nightmare. The bruises had vanished long ago, replaced by a deep, quiet strength that mirrored her mother’s unwavering resilience.

Victoria walked out onto the porch carrying two mugs of hot cider, handing one to Clara before sitting down in the adjacent rocking chair.

“The Zurich extradition was finalized this afternoon,” Victoria murmured gently, blowing steam off her mug. “Marcus Vance will stand trial alongside Dominic’s remaining lieutenants next month.”

Clara looked out over the quiet lawn, watching the golden leaves drift slowly across the brick steps where she had collapsed in desperation.

“I used to think power meant having money, control, and people who were too afraid to say no,” Clara said softly, her voice steady and clear. “Dominic lived his entire life believing that. But watching you... I realize true power is just refusing to let fear dictate the truth.”

Victoria reached across the space between their chairs, squeezing her daughter’s hand affectionately. “Power is simply holding the line when everyone else expects you to break, sweetheart.”
