Chapter 19 - The Verdict of Time

Five years later, the headlines in the regional newspapers had long since stopped mentioning the Ward Syndicate. Dominic Ward remained locked away in a federal cell three states away, a forgotten ghost of a criminal empire that had vanished without a trace.
In the federal courthouse downtown, Judge Victoria Sterling walked down the grand marble hallway, her judicial robes rustling softly as she headed toward her chambers. A young federal law clerk hurried alongside her, holding an open tablet.
“Your Honor, the Ninth Circuit affirmed your summary judgment on the asset forfeiture case this morning,” the clerk reported. “Legal scholars are already publishing reviews on how the ruling set a precedent for dismantling corporate shell fronts.”

Victoria nodded thoughtfully, stopping outside the heavy oak doors of her chambers. “Precedents only matter if they protect the people who cannot protect themselves,” she replied simply.
She stepped inside her office, where a framed photograph sat on her bookshelf: her daughter Clara smiling radiantly in the sun, holding a healthy, laughing four-year-old child whose bright eyes carried the unmistakable spark of absolute resilience.
