Chapter 12 - The Inside Informant

In the stark, concrete confines of the federal penitentiary, Dominic paced his eight-by-ten cell like a caged animal. His cell block was quiet, save for the distant metallic echo of heavy security doors slamming shut.

A guard rapped a heavy baton against the steel bars. “Ward. Visiting room. Booth three.”

Dominic sneered, straightening his orange jumpsuit as he followed the corrections officer down the sterile corridor, assuming one of his remaining corrupted fixers had finally managed to buy a legal visit.

Instead of a corrupt lawyer, the visitor waiting behind the reinforced plexiglass partition was former Captain Sean Miller. The disgraced police captain looked hollowed out, his uniform replaced by the same orange prison garb, his face pale and gaunt.

Dominic slammed his palm against the glass, his eyes blazing with fury. “You! You pathetic coward! You were supposed to sweep the station! You swore my back was covered!”

Miller looked up slowly, his eyes devoid of the arrogant authority he once wielded on the streets.

“My back wasn't covered, Dominic,” Miller whispered through the secure audio speaker, his voice flat and broken. “The moment Judge Sterling signed that wiretap warrant, we were all dead meat. I didn't trade you out to save myself—I traded you out because the Feds already had the ledger for every bribe I took since 2022. There was no loyalty, Ward. Only math. And the judge’s math always balances.”
