Chapter 15 - The Sniper’s Nest

Across the wide avenue, from the darkened penthouse balcony of an abandoned construction site directly opposite the Plaza Hotel, the crosshairs of a thermal-scoped rifle aligned perfectly with the center of Elena’s back.

The shooter adjusted his breathing, his finger resting lightly against the titanium trigger. Three... two... one...

CRACK.

A high-velocity round tore through the double-paned acoustic glass of the hotel ballroom, shattering a crystal chandelier directly above the VIP table. Shards of diamond-like glass rained down over the terrified guests as screams erupted into chaotic pandemonium.

"Get down!" Elena screamed, throwing herself physically over her three daughters, shielding their small bodies with her own as a second bullet embedded itself inches from her boot into the imported French parquet floor.

Within seconds, heavy security shutters slammed down automatically across the ballroom windows, sealing the room. But the panic inside was absolute.

"Mommy, I'm scared!" Sophie sobbed, burying her face in Elena’s shoulder.

"Look at me, my angels," Elena whispered fiercely, her eyes burning with a terrifying, protective fire. "Mommy is right here. Nothing—and no one—will ever touch you."
