Chapter 3 - The Ghost in the ICU

At 3:15 AM, the hospital corridor grew deathly quiet. The midnight cleaning crews had finished scrubbing the floors, leaving the reflective marble so pristine it mirrored the pale fluorescent strips overhead.

Inside ICU Room 4, the rhythmic beep... beep... beep of the heart monitor was the only sound anchoring Elena to the living world. Her skin was translucent, her long blonde hair spread across the white pillow like spun gold, dulled by the harsh shadow of near-death.

Suddenly, the green line on the primary ECG monitor flatlined.

Beeeeeeeeeeeeep.

A continuous, high-pitched tone cut through the silence of the room. No nurses rushed in. No alarm bells triggered at the central nursing station. The digital display on the wall flickered, the hospital's central operating system suddenly displaying a manual override code: SYSTEM LOCKOUT - MAINTENANCE MODE.

From the shadows of the adjoining observation room, a tall figure stepped through the sliding glass door, which had been manually unlocked from the master control panel. The person wore a clean, crisp white lab coat over dark clothing, their face obscured by a surgical mask and a blue disposable cap.

The figure walked slowly to the side of Elena’s bed. Reaching into a leather medical pouch, they pulled out a pre-filled syringe containing a clear, viscous liquid.

"I'm sorry, Elena," a voice whispered—distorted, mechanical, yet intimately familiar. "You knew too much about the Swiss accounts. Grant was always sloppy with his offshore transfers, but you... you had to audit the family trust fund. Dead women don't contest divorces."

The gloved hand hovered over the central IV port, ready to plunge the lethal air bubble and chemical cocktail straight into her jugular vein.

Just as the needle pressed against the rubber valve, Elena’s eyes—supposedly locked in a coma—snapped wide open.

Her hand, ice-cold and lightning-fast, shot out from beneath the hospital blanket and clamped around the intruder's wrist with terrifying, preternatural strength. The monitor didn't flatline because her heart had stopped; she had wired a bypass sensor herself three hours ago, anticipating this exact execution.

"You dropped your pen, darling," Elena whispered, her voice raspy, laced with a terrifying, venomous calm that made the intruder’s blood freeze.
