Chapter 22 - The Ghost in the Archives

While the delegates waited inside the great hall, Elena bypassed the main podium and descended into the historical sub-basement archives of the Palais des Nations, accompanied only by Agent Vance and two heavily armed tactical guards.
The air down here smelled of old vellum, damp concrete, and centuries of quiet political backstabbing. Rows of steel filing cabinets stretched into the dim fluorescent shadows.
"The transmission pinged from Terminal 4-B," Vance said, his tactical flashlight cutting through the gloom. He tapped a code into a reinforced blast door. "This sector hasn't been accessed since the Cold War."
The heavy steel door swung open with a pneumatic hiss. Inside sat an archaic, militarized mainframe computer, its glowing green CRT screen casting eerie shadows against the stone walls. A single red blinking light indicated an active data stream.
On the screen, a text file was scrolling upward in real-time, line by line: PROJECT KRONOS INITIALIZATION: 48 HOURS UNTIL GLOBAL FINANCIAL GRID CORRUPTION. TARGET: ELENA HOLLOWAY-VANCE.
"It's a dead-man's switch," Vance muttered, his jaw tightening. "Someone programmed this system to execute a total erasure of the Holloway-Vance global accounts if a specific cryptographic key isn't entered within forty-eight hours."

Elena stepped forward, her heels clicking rhythmically against the stone floor. She leaned over the terminal, her eyes scanning the raw source code. Buried deep within the nested directories was a digital signature—a personal watermark she recognized from her father's old private ledgers.
"It's not a dead-man's switch," Elena whispered, a chilling realization dawning on her. "It's an invitation."
