Chapter 9 - The House of Mirrors

Stripped of his tailored suits, wearing coarse orange institutional garb, Grant Holloway was transported under heavy federal guard to the decaying, isolated seaside mansion in the Hamptons—the ancestral home where his father had ruled like a tyrant.
The estate was dark, battered by howling Atlantic gales and salt spray. The heavy iron front gates groaned as they swung open, admitting a single transport van.
Grant was shoved out onto the gravel driveway, his wrists shackled, the rain stinging his face. The federal agents uncuffed his hands, threw a single duffel bag of civilian clothes onto the wet ground, and drove away into the stormy night, leaving him entirely alone in the abyss of his family’s past.
"Hello, Grant."
The voice came from the shadowy veranda. Elena stepped out from behind a towering stone pillar, wearing a dark trench coat, illuminated by a flash of lightning that sliced across the night sky.
Grant stumbled backward, slipping on the wet stones. "Elena? What is this? Where are the marshals? You can't do this—this is kidnapping!"
"This isn't kidnapping, Grant. This is a family reunion," Elena said, walking slowly down the marble steps toward him, the sound of her heels clicking against the stone like a ticking clock.
She stopped two feet away from him, looking down at the man who had tried to bury her alive.
"Your father built this house on stolen ground and drowned my father in these very waters," Elena said, her voice trembling slightly with suppressed rage. "You thought you married a trophy wife you could discard when she became inconvenient. You forgot that my father taught me every single trick your family ever used to steal an empire."
Grant scrambled backward until his back hit the cold iron railing of the cliffside terrace, the dark, churning ocean crashing violently against the rocks hundreds of feet below.
"What do you want?" Grant cried out, his voice cracking with genuine terror for the first time in his life. "Take everything! Take the billions! Just let me live!"
Elena pulled a heavy, brass-bound key from her pocket and dropped it onto the wet gravel between his feet.
"The front door is unlocked, Grant," she whispered, turning her back to him. "Inside, you'll find the master safe. Inside the safe is a single revolver with one bullet, and the true records of everything your father did."

She paused, looking back over her shoulder with a gaze so devoid of mercy it felt like absolute zero.
"You have until sunrise to decide whether you want to face a lifetime in a federal cage, or finish what your family started."
