Chapter 10 - THE NEW HORIZONIt was a brilliant autumn afternoon in Chicago, exactly one year since the infamous birthday party at the Bellmont Hotel.

I stood on the private wrap-around terrace of my newly renovated penthouse overlooking Lake Michigan, holding a laughing, one-year-old Alexander in my arms. He wore a crisp little blue sweater, clutching a silver baby rattle that looked suspiciously like a miniature cake knife.
Melanie stepped onto the terrace carrying two glasses of chilled champagne, handing one to me with a brilliant toast-worthy grin.
"To corporate dominance, absolute freedom, and never letting a man tell you who you are," Melanie toasted, clinking her glass against mine.
I laughed, taking a crisp sip of the champagne as the afternoon sun caught the brilliant sparkle of the antique diamond necklace Marjorie had given me—now repurposed into a stunning custom pendant.
Down below on the bustling streets of Chicago, the world moved on, indifferent to the fallen egos and broken empires of the past. But up here, high above the crystal chandeliers and the echoing ghosts of the Bellmont Hotel, a new dynasty was thriving.
Alexander reached out, grabbing a lock of my hair and pulling playfully. I kissed his cheek, my heart overflowing with an unbreakable, sovereign strength.

Grant Waverly had tried to break me on my thirty-first birthday. Instead, he had merely given me the fire to forge an empire.
And I was only just getting started.
