Chapter 14 - THE MIDNIGHT INTRUSIONThree nights after the gala, the penthouse suite was bathed in the quiet, silver glow of moonlight filtering through the floor-to-ceiling windows. Little Alexander was fast asleep in his nursery down the hall, guarded by our round-the-clock private security detail.

I was sitting at the study desk reviewing an international contract when a sharp, electronic chime interrupted the silence.
Security Alert: Perimeter breach detected at private service elevator level 48.
I didn't panic. I calmly set down my pen, opened the top drawer of the mahogany desk, and wrapped my fingers around the cold, heavy grip of a registered, legally permitted compact firearm. Years ago, Grant had convinced me I was defenseless without him. Today, I knew how to protect my own world.
The security monitor flickered. On the screen, a lone figure stepped out of the service elevator shaft, slipping through the emergency maintenance corridor like a ghost.
It wasn't an assassin. It wasn't a professional hitman.
It was Grant.
He had somehow managed a prison furlough under the guise of a medical emergency, or perhaps Victoria’s money had bought a temporary release. He wore a heavy dark coat, his hair unkempt, his eyes wild and desperate as he crept down the private hallway toward my living quarters.
I stood up, stepping out of the study just as the heavy oak door of the penthouse master suite rattled. A key scraped clumsily in the deadbolt—an old master key he must have stolen or duplicated years ago.
Click.
The door swung open. Grant stumbled into the dimly lit foyer, breathing heavily, smelling of cheap bourbon and cold sweat.
His eyes locked onto mine across the living room. For a second, he froze.
"Claire..." Grant breathed, taking a shaky step forward. "Claire, please... you have to listen to me. Victoria... Victoria is using me, she's going to ruin everything, but we can fix this. We're still husband and wife—the divorce papers... they never went through final processing because of the federal stay!"
I raised my right hand, the cold barrel of the firearm catching the moonlight. I didn't point it directly at his chest, but the message was unmistakable.
"Stop right there, Grant," I said, my voice dangerously steady, cutting through the silence of the penthouse like a razor blade.
Grant stopped dead in his tracks, staring at the gun with wide, horror-struck eyes.
"Claire... you wouldn't," he choked out, raising his hands. "I'm the father of your child—"
"You are nothing," I interrupted, stepping closer until I stood just feet away from him, my gaze piercing straight into his soul. "You are a trespasser in a home you never built, standing before a woman you tried to destroy. The divorce was finalized by federal decree three months ago, Grant. You have no home, no company, no wife, and no power."
Grant dropped to his knees, tears finally spilling over his hollow cheeks, his hands gripping the hem of my trousers. "Please, Claire... I have nothing left. Victoria will kill me if I don't destroy you. Please..."
At that exact moment, the elevator doors down the hall dinged open, and the sharp footsteps of federal marshals and building security echoed through the corridor.

"Inmate Waverly! You are in violation of federal release terms and state trespassing laws!" Agent Miller shouted, rushing into the suite with zip-ties ready.
As the guards pulled Grant away, kicking and screaming like a broken child, I didn't blink. I lowered the firearm, walked back to my study, and closed the door.
